[Bookplate for George Macaulay Booth] This is a pictorial bookplate created with black ink on white paper. In the foreground are cobblestones and an open doorway. On the left of the doorway is a desk with a lit candle and an open book on it and in the middle of the doorway is a sundial. Outside of the doorway are rolling hills with two paths: one leading to a village and the other to a bay with two boats on it. A sun sets/rises over the bay. At the bottom is a Latin inscription framed with two roses that reads: "Nec temere nec timide [neither rashly nor timidly] / Dulce Periculum [danger is sweet]." Two animals are portrayed on the right and left sides of the inscription. 2. [Bookplate for Marcel Godfrey Isaacs by W. P. B.] This heraldric bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), with a bend, or (gold), and a square charged with the head of a cougar at sinister chief. Above the escutcheon is an esquire helmet, which is charged with a straight wreath and an arm embowed fessways, holding a dagger piercing the head of a cougar. Bookplate owner's name at base. 3. [Bookplate for Thomas H. Smallman by F. Durrant] This heraldric bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a chevron, or (gold), charge dwith three falcons, addorsed and inverted, two over one. Above the escutcheon is an esquire helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a heraldric antelope. Motto is contained within banner beneath escutcheon. 4. [Bookplate for John Keeling] This heraldic bookplate consists of a Chippendale-styled escutcheon, sable (black), charged with a lion rampant. The lion holds an inescutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a cross fitchy. The escutcheon is crested by a demi-lion atop a mural coronet, again holding an inescutcheon, argent, charged with a cross fitchy. The escutcheon is bordered by a decorative floral design, and at dexter, a dragon is positioned at the upper half. Flowers are present on the opposite side. Below the escutcheon, but within the floral design, the Latin motto is featured in a banner. 5. [Bookplate for Thorleit Larson] This bookplate's design is focus on the "Ex Libris" ; the text and surrounding design is done in a style reminiscent of an illuminated manuscript. A book containing owner's name is below. 6. [Bookplate for Lockwood] This bookplate's design features an escutcheon, argent (silver) and sable (black), charged with three martlets. Another martlet rests above the escutcheon on the stump of an oak tree, erased and the Lockwood family motto appears in a banner below. 7. [Bookplate for Baron de Hirsch Institute and Hebrew Benevolent Society] This bookplate is in two parts: One to show ownership by the library, the other to show who made the presentation of the book to the library. 1) In black ink on white or cream paper. The bookplate consists of lines for recording location information, the seal of the institute [two concentric rings with the name and dates of the institute surrounding the inner circle, which contains a Star of David surrounding some Hebrew text], and other lines for noting the number and receipt date of the book surrounding the library name. 2) In black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a thin border surrounding black text. 8. [Bookplate for Johannis Platt by John Dickson Batten] This bookplate has both heraldic and pictoral qualities. The primary subject of the bookplate is a lamb, grazing in a glade of flowers, with bookplate owner's name in a banner below. In the background, the bookplate features a pen of sheep as well as a dead wolf hanging from a tree. At top-left corner, the bookplate features an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with two fleur-de-lis and a lamb, two over one, and a chevron or (gold) charged with a fleur-de-lis and two cinque foil. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, with a wreath charged with a grazing lamb. Mantling radiates from the helmet, and Welsh motto is contained on one side. The entire scene is contained within a stylized border, with Welsh motto within. 9. [Bookplate for Mary Cleghorn] This bookplate features a squirrel and leaf design motif, and artistically relies heavily on positive and negative space. Bookplate text is aligned top mid-right, and two block floral borders are places above and below the primary image. Artists' mark, possibly reading 'R.T.P.' is at bottom right. 10. [Bookplate for Henri Rainville] This bookplate depicts a large, bespectacled rat, dressed in what appears to be eighteenth-century attire and displaying a prominent tail and whiskers. Facing away from the viewer, the rat is seated at a table in front of a window, through which the leaves of a tree can be seen. The rodent holds a quill pen and is poised to continue writing in a book that is propped open on the table with a second, closed volume. 11. [Bookplate by F.A.C.] The bookplate depicts a lakeside scene in which a hotel is set among trees at the edge of the water. Prominent hills also give a sense of the surrounding landscape. This picturesque scene is framed by a border of trees. Amongst the leaves at the top of image is a scroll that reads 'Ex-Libris.' At the bottom of the image, an open book displays the words 'Rogers Rock.'. 12. [Bookseller's Ticket for James Cleghorn] Textual bookseller ticket contained within double lined border. 13. [Bookplate for Claude Lamont Wheeler by C. Collmen] Printed in black on white or cream paper. In the upper left corner of the bookplate appear the words 'NULLA DIES SINE / LINEA' followed by four upward pointing arrows or crosses. To the right in the upper center of the bookplate appears a framed portrait of a horned figure (the devil?). The center of the bookplate shows the caricatured figure of a man sitting at a roll top desk. His tall wooden chair leaves his feet dangling above the ground. The man holds a lit cigar in his left hand and quill pen in his right hand. The desk, the wastepaper basket to the right of it, and the floor around it are littered with sheets of paper. Several books, as well as an owl and a human skull sit on the top of the desk. To the left, an over-sized pair of scissors leans against the man's chair. To the right of the desk appears the name of the illustrator, C. Collmen(?). Below the illustration appears a white bordered box with the words 'Ex Libris,' below which appears the name of the owner. 14. [Bookplate for Thomas Troughton] Printed in black ink on white paper, in the upper left of the ex libris appears the crest of a lion erased issuing from a straight wreath. At the base of the lion's head is a veil sable with two pellet over one plate. To the right is the crest of a stag statant issuing from a straight wreath. Below the two crests appears a banner bearing the motto 'CARPE DIEM.' At the bottom of the ex libris appears the name of the owner, 'The Revd. Thomas Tronghton.'. 15. [Bookplate for Claude Lamont Wheeler] Printed in black ink on greenish gray paper, the bookplate consists of a two line border surrounding the name of the owner. In the lower left corner appears the word 'No.' followed by a dotted line for the addition of a hand-written number. The number '33' has been written in ink. 16. [Bookplate for Barbara Joyce Chandler] In dark blue ink on light blue paper. Primary bookplate design consists of a ship crested upon waves, with three figures within. The figures are young girls, two reading books and the other holding a book. Beneath the waves is bookplate text, with small illustrations of a castle, knight and fish. 17. [Bookplate for Ziba Gallagher by Herbert Ecclestone] In brown ink. Bookplate's design is an image of a armoured knight mounted on a horse. Knight is carrying a banner in a wooded area. Background design is of a town or dwellings at a distance. Bookplate text contained within banner at base of design. 18. [Bookplate for James Phinney Baxter] In black ink. This ex-libris includes a portrait of the originator in the upper-right-hand corner, identified by his name and geographic locale. The remaining two-thirds of the bookplate consist of a depiction of the interior of a library. In a section spanning the base of the bookplate is a cursive, printed motto and a hand-written book number. The printed text is drawn from the last two lines of the second stanza of a poem composed by Baxter, entitled, "The Library." 19. [Bookplate for Thomas Taylor by James Cole] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black) charged at the nombril point with a lion statant. The rococo escutcheon has scalloped edges at the top and is surrounded by vegetative mantling. Hidden in the mantling is the creator's signature, Cole sc. Above the crest is a straight wreath charged with a leopard statant and below the escutcheon is a banner containing Taylor's Latin motto. 20. [Bookplate for Basil Thomas Woodd by Benjamin Warwick] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, gules (red), are charged with three demi-Hercules, two over one. Quarters two and three, sable (black), are charged with gryphons rampant, segreant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, or (gold), charged with a lion rampant, sable, on a chief, gules, in the middle part a fillet, dovetailed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three, azure (blue), are charged with a fleur-de-lis. The escutcheon is set upon a backdrop of concentric circles. The inner circle is decorated with vine-like patterns. Within the outer circle, the originator's Latin motto "non nobis" appears. Below the concentric circles, the creator's signature and address, Benjn. Warwick 124 Regent Street appear. Above the circle is a peer helmet, surrounded by vegetative mantling, and atop the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a demi-figure of Hercules.
